How to Make Your Kitchen Space More Functional

When space is at a premium, it pays to give careful consideration to every available inch. If you look around, even in a small kitchen there are lots of opportunities to make the kitchen space more functional. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Utilize Ceiling Space

One of the most obvious, yet least used space is right over your head. The ceiling space is just waiting to be used, and chances are, all you’re using it for currently is to hold an overhead kitchen light. You can use the ceiling to hang a pot rack, a hanging cooking utensil rack, a tiered basket hanger for fruits, vegetables and garlic, and more. Just be sure to screw in the hardware to a ceiling beam so it will hold up with sufficient strength.

Arrange Countertop Appliances Better

Some people may mistakenly arrange countertop appliances according to what looks good. But in the kitchen, the right arrangement  is important for functionality. Countertop appliances should be arranged according to their use. For instance, coffeemakers and blenders should be next to the sink, because these appliances use water. The toaster oven should be near the stovetop because it performs a similar function. The food processor should be near the cutting board, etc.

Use the Backsplash for Storage

Your kitchen backsplash—that area on the wall between your countertop and the bottom of the cabinets—is a blank canvas just waiting to be filled. You can store all kinds of things vertically on the backsplash when you magnetize it. Screw on a magnetized board on the backsplash. Now you can easily use it to hold spice jars with magnetized lids, chef’s knives, measuring spoons and cups, and even metal cooking spoons.

Hopefully, these three ideas will help you to look at all the space in your kitchen in a new light. With a little imagination and a household toolkit, every nook and cranny of your kitchen can be turned into a functional, practical space.
